Planning your first-ever outing to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt? We’re breaking down each of the unique market experiences and what to expect - but first things first: Attending the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is totally *free.* There are no entrance lines or fees and you can park for free too. But a heads-up, those gleaming ice skates that your little ones are eyeing? There's a price tag attached, and we’ll get to that.

Here is our complete guide to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt for first-timers:

Craft in the Kinderecke or “Kid’s Corner:”

Here you will find a plethora of activities and DIY opportunities for kids of all ages. From ornaments to centerpieces, your kiddo can make a memory that you can take home and cherish for years to come. Oh - and it’s all FREE.

Discover Kulturecke:

This exhibit shares the history of German-Americans in Indiana as well as the origins of some pretty popular Christmas traditions, and other interesting cultural facts.

Need a sneak peek before you go? We gotchu:

Enjoy the Spielhaus or “Playhouse:”

Amp up the magic of the season by taking advantage of the myriad of special characters just waiting to meet your little ones at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt this year. From princesses to Santa himself, this is a can’t-miss!

Pop over to the Winter Pavilion:

With your raclette and Glühwein in hand, take in enchanting holiday music and shows performed by international artists. Don’t forget your boot! Yes, we mean the literal boot mug. Every year the market hosts a new design and these beautiful mugs have quickly become a treasured collectible.

Visit the Werkstatt or “Workshop:”

Meet the German artisans and craftsmen as they work their creative magic right before your eyes in the bustling workshop area. It's like walking into Santa's workshop! And remember, check their schedule and plan accordingly.

Bring your appetite (and ID, there are many drink huts to try!):

Yes, there are tons of delightful food and warming drink options from over 20 vendors offering mouth-watering German fare. You and your crew will easily find a new holiday favorite! New in 2024: Feuerzangenbowle, a flaming, rum-spiked gluhwein (we’ll pause while you take that in).

But what about ice skating?

We did promise you an ice rink deep dive, so let’s get into it! The first thing to know: while the market is free, skating on The Ice at Carter Green (the official name of the rink in the center of it all) is not. Each skater must have a ticket for their reserved time on the ice beforehand.
Speaking of skating tickets, they *can* be grabbed at the venue, but be warned, they sell out FAST. So, scoop those tickets online and thank us later. Also be advised the rink closes on warmer weather days so check the Carmel Christkindlmarkt socials beforehand to be in the loop.
(DYK? Personal skates are allowed. So if you have ’em, bring ’em!)

What’s parking like?

Parking is free, but be prepared. Getting in and out of the lots or garage can take a while, especially during peak times so expect to exercise some patience. After all, you're not a regular mom; you're a cool mom.

When is the best time to go?

If you’re like us, you want to know the perfect time to pay a visit to dodge the crowd and maximize line-free fun. Our friends at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt were happy to spill: Visit at or near opening time, and on the weekdays when everything is quieter.

But, if you’d rather experience the hustle and bustle of the German market - then you’ll want to check it out on the weekends, during special events, and in the evenings. Enjoy the festive atmosphere filled with friends and neighbors!

Let’s talk potty breaks…

Heading there with the mini squad in tow? Brace yourself for lines longer than Santa’s nice list. Have those backup plans ready. (Pro tip for those in training: A quick pull-up might be your saving grace amidst the restroom bedlam. No judgment.)

Baby, it’s cold outside…

Now, while the incredible staff and volunteers have done everything they can to create a magical, enjoyable Christkindlmarkt, there is one thing they can’t help: The weather. And the Midwest gets *cold.* There are some heaters around, but unless they decide to uproot the event to July (definitely not on the cards), it's going to be nippy. So layer up, and make sure those little ones are bundled up as well so chilly winds don’t end your fun before it's even begun.
