What is hyperemesis?
Hyperemesis. It’s a word that was likely not in many women’s vocabularies until Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, became pregnant. But for those women who were already familiar, the term is one they will likely never forget. So what is hyperemesis? Referring to hyperemesis as “bad morning sickness” is akin to calling the plague a “bad cold.” The condition, formally known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum, is characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and electrolyte disturbance in pregnant women. While most women will experience some morning sickness, hyperemesis is quite rare, with some estimates saying only two percent of pregnant women are afflicted. The condition is usually at its most severe during the first trimester and often subsides in the second trimester, but some women experience its symptoms for the duration of the pregnancy. As if pregnancy weren’t hard enough...
CityMom Stephanie Beeson never imagined she would have something in common with “Princess Kate”, but unfortunately for her, she does. Pregnant with her second child, Stephanie opened up to us about her second battle with this often misunderstood affliction.
Q: How were you originally diagnosed with hyperemesis?
A: With my first pregnancy I couldn't keep anything down, and I was diagnosed when I ended up hospitalized at 5 weeks for vomiting and dehydration. With this pregnancy I had medication from my doctor the moment I found out I was pregnant. At 4 weeks the vomiting started. I called my doctor and told her what was going on. She added more medication. I vomit daily and often multiple times a day even on meds but I haven't had to go to the hospital for which I am thankful.
Q: What is it like being pregnant with Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
A: It is honestly really difficult. I feel sick all of the time. I am excited to have another baby, but I hate being pregnant. I am miserable a lot of the time. Early on I was barely functional, and there were times I couldn't get out of bed. I am lucky because antinausea medication does help me eat, and my symptoms are lessening a bit as I move into my second trimester. It is also very isolating. Other than work I don't really get out of the house much. My two year old and I are having to watch a lot of movies. It breaks my heart when he wants to play and I have to tell him I can't right now. As a family we are very active, but there is a lot I can't do right now because if I over do it, I will get sick. One thing that was really unexpected this time was actually the damage to my teeth. I had to have an emergency filing a week ago and I had another painful tooth develop this weekend. I didn't even realize that would happen.

Q: How does this condition affect your family planning?
A: I was in great shape before this pregnancy, and I told myself it might not happen again. I originally wanted three kids but after two hyperemesis pregnancies, I don't think I can ever be pregnant again. Hyperemesis has taken a huge toll on me physically, mentally, and emotionally. I don't think I can handle or risk having it a third time.
Q: Are there any misconceptions about this condition that you want to address?
A: That it is bad morning sickness. It is not. It is severe. It can be life threatening. It is debilitating. Medication doesn't always work.
Q: Do you have any advice for fellow mommas experiencing this?
A: Find a doctor who is familiar with hyperemesis and keep them informed of how you are doing. Get support, whether from friends, family, or one of the many support groups. Be kind to yourself. You can't control it, and you are doing the best you can.
